If yellow is the easiest colour to see why are stops signs red?

Yellow is the most natural colour for people to see.  So if that is the case, why would stop signs be red?

Colour influences our emotions, while yellow is the easiest colour to see, red is known to cause heightened awareness, excitement and arousal.  Red is a colour that more people are likely to notice and pay attention to.

“Red is the only colour that even begins to rival black in its associations.  It’s imbued with deep visceral and symbolic meaning” Valerie Steele

Scientific studies reveal that hearts beat faster and blood pressure rises when we respond to red.  Red is a colour that we are going to pay more attention to.  Red is energising and it motivates us to take action.
