The Benefits of Parallax Scrolling

Benefits of Parallax Scrolling

One of the best methods to present the content of your website is by using a technique called parallax scrolling. This has the effect of creating an illusion which causes a feeling of immersion by creating an interesting three-dimensional visual effect.  The experience – comprises two separate images viewed simultaneously to create the illusion of three dimensions.  The resulting experience is actually assembled in our brains.

In the late 1980’s and early 90’s, games like Super Mario Brothers and Sonic the Hedgehog created the illusion of depth by incorporating layered background images that would scroll with the character at varying speeds.  For instance, as the player would run, a distant background image of mountains would move slowly, while closer background images would move faster.

Here are some of the reasons why we use parallax scrolling techniques at Bailey Street Design.

  1. It reduces the size of your website. A website that has a parallax scrolling feature is a 1-page website. This enables us as designers, to put all the website content on 1 page instead of using multiple pages.
  2. Attracts and holds the viewers attention. I have mentioned frequently in my blog posts that when someone clicks on a website, you only have a few seconds to catch the attention of users, otherwise they will leave your site and get the information that they need from another website. A website with this sort of animation causes a user experience that you cannot achieve on a flat site.
  3. Encourages long visits. The technique of parallax scrolling encourages visitors to navigate around the site in a non traditional way. This means that users are likely gonna stay longer in your website.
  4. Increases the curiosity of visitors. Parallax scrolling and its uniqueness will encourage your visitors to ask “What next?” This is the question that should be on the minds of your visitors after visiting a website that features a parallax scrolling. The element of surprise, cool graphics and animations is what engages tech savvy people.

If you’d like to find more information about the parallax technique and how we could integrate it in your website. Please feel free to get in touch.
