Microsoft has promised to help a teacher from Ghana who became an internet sensation.  Facebook images show him drawing with chalk on the blackboard illustrating to his students how to use Microsoft’s Word.  He is teaching ICT (Information communication and technology).

The teacher, Richard Appiah Akoto (33) who on Facebook uses the name Owura Kwadao Hottish teaches Information, Technology and Communication.  The images shared on Facebook show the students taking careful notes.

The Betenase school does not have a computer, although since 2011 it is expected that Akoto’s 14-15-year-old students will be required to pass a national exam without which students can not progress to the next level of school and in which ICT is one of the subjects.

In Ghana, many rural schools such as Betenase struggle against weak infrastructure and logistical challenges. Thanks to the power of social networks, at least the situation of Akoto’s students could improve.
