Filip Pagowski, the designer behind Comme des Garçons’ iconic heart logo, has teamed up with Nike to redesign the motifs of 30 NBA teams.
“The idea behind the project was not to replicate the original or the official logos of each team, but rather come up with something that portrayed the team or the place they are coming from, or both, and to have it done in some fun way,” Pagowski explained in a press release.
Pagowski drew inspiration for the designs from the history of, and imagery relevant to, each NBA team.
For example, for Chicago Bulls, Pagowski “wanted to make the Bull look strong and powerful and maybe look a little bit ferocious too.” He took some elements “from mythological Greek imagery” as it is “nicely contrasted with the drawing that’s on the official logo.”
Pagowski’s illustrations see a balance of humor and history behind its whimsical NBA mascots. The designs will be printed on T-shirts slated for launch on 19 March through Nike Connected NBA jerseys and on 21 April via the Nike App.
